“I am very humbled,” Chawa said at a recent Utica Community Schools Board of Education meeting.

The Utica High School senior was recognized as a semifinalist in the 2006-07 Siemens Math, Science and Technology competition. The competition honored Chawa for his accomplishments in the science field.

Chawa spent the summer working with Wayne State University staff on a science research project. The project yielded a medical remedy that has not yet been publicly released.

“With its high academic standards, rigorous judging process and emphasis on authentic scientific research, the Siemens Corporation is regarded as one of the leading science and mathematics-based competitions for high school students,” said Richard Machesky, executive director of Secondary Education. “Simran’s selection as a semifinalist is a tremendous accomplishment and we are proud to recognize his hard work and efforts.”

Chawa’s accomplishments were published in the Oct. 23 edition of USA Today and the Siemens Foundation Web site (www.siemens-foundation.org). Utica High School has also hung a banner in Chawa’s honor at the school.

Chawa is also involved in Science Olympiad, is co-captain of the Quiz Bowl team and has participated in the political science debate camp Operation Bently. Chawa also founded the Students for Organ Donation organization in hopes of raising awareness of the need for organ donations.
